Attenction Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) and impaired Executive Functioning (EF) can wreak havoc on the lives of people of any age, but it can be especially damaging to teens and college students. The extreme internal and external changes that occur during this period of their lives can affect development at all levels.

Teens, AD/HD and EF
Needless to say, the teen years are challenging enough without the stresses of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) and impaired Executive Functioning (EF). Since there is less structure at the high school level, teens have to be more responsible. This newfound responsibility, along with the other pressures of high school, only worsens the disorder and therefore teens typically encounter problems with academics along with identity issues including negative self-image, and difficulty in social situations.

As a coach, I help teens achieve their full potential by developing the life skills they need to take better control of this often turbulent period of their lives. This process starts by helping teens discover their strengths. We then accentuate and reinforce those strengths to help build self-esteem, improve skills both inside and outside the classroom, and increase self-awareness.

My coaching helps teens:

  • Develop tools to improve their academic and social lives
  • Improve problem solving skills
  • Learn time management, decision-making, and organizational skills
  • Pursue self-discipline, self-confidence, and self-advocacy at school
  • Effectively respond to peer pressure
  • Create self-awareness, accountability, and techniques to manage anger and frustration
  • Set goals, manage progress, reduce distractions, and build resilience to improve coping skills
  • Discover his/her unique learning style and use it to succeed academically by letting teachers know how he/she learns best
  • Have more productive relationships
  • Learn prioritization tips and how to minimize procrastination
  • Create personal and academic routines

This holistic approach doesn’t just help teens with coping strategies for Attention Deficit Disorder and Executive Functioning challenges, it also gives them the confidence and skills they need to realize their goals and sets them on the course to life-long success.

College Students with AD/HD and Impaired EF
College students with AD/HD and impaired EF also face a unique set of challenges. The routines and structures built throughout childhood and high school are no longer present in their new environment. They encounter new experiences and expectations that can be overwhelming. This can have a devastating impact on their ability to organize and prioritize, excel academically, and form relationships.

I help college students with AD/HD and impaired Executive Functioning thrive by coaching them to focus on the details of their “new” lives that will bring them the most success. This includes developing the habits, routines, and skills necessary to adapt to new experiences and make good decisions.

My approach to coaching college students includes:

  • Providing a source of external support, structure, and accountability
  • Creating sensible study habits to meet the high academic demands
  • Setting academic, social, and life goals
  • Planning for the pitfalls of daily life by understanding their AD/HD triggers
  • Developing self-awareness to better understand behaviors and be proactive self-advocates

Coaching is absolutely critical to the ongoing success of students as they transition from high school to college. My ultimate goal is to provide college students with the tools they need to prosper in college and throughout the rest of their lives.
