Top 15 Tips for Parents

adhd coachingRaising kids is a fulfilling and frustrating experience all at the same time. When you add ADHD into the mix, it heightens both sides of the coin. Here are some helpful tips that parents can use to navigate through some of the normal challenges that come with raising a kid with ADHD:

  • Educate yourself about ADHD.
  • Separate ADHD-related behaviors from non-ADHD-related ones.
  • Acknowledge your child’s strengths.
  • Advocate for your child.
  • Avoid power struggles.
  • Focus on your child’s successes without comparing him/her to others.
  • Choose your battles.
  • Follow through with logical consequences (check out my blog post from last week to learn more about natural and logical consequences).
  • Point out the positive characteristics of ADHD (e.g., being an “out of the box” thinker).
  • Offer choices.
  • Work together on having smooth mornings.
  • Be firm and loving.
  • Spend quality time together.
  • Set clear limits and stick to them.
  • Vow to stop nagging or yelling.
